CHANG TAO-LIN 張道林
Chinese-American 1925
Born in 1925 in Wuhu, Anhui Province, Chang Tao-Lin was a distinguished artist and educator who played a pivotal role in Taiwan’s post-war art history. He studied under masters Lin Fengmian and Fang Ganmin at the National Hangzhou Academy of Art. After moving to Taiwan in 1948, he dedicated his career to teaching at the Chinese Culture University, the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, and National Taiwan Normal University. Upon his retirement, he relocated to the United States and resided in New York, where he served as an exchange professor and subsequently as a visiting professor at St. John’s University, continuing his artistic legacy abroad.

Chang’s style evolved from early Post-Impressionist and Cubist influences—characterized by analogous color planes—to a unique Oriental oil painting style developed in the late 1950s. By thinning his pigments and utilizing negative space, he achieved a simplified, hazy aesthetic reminiscent of traditional ink wash painting. A recipient of the Ministry of Education’s Literature and Art Award and the Golden Goblet Award, he also served as a frequent juror for major national exhibitions. His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.
