Born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu and graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1986, Ying Tianqi started working as professional painter in Wuhu Painting and Calligraphy House in 1991. He now works as professor of Shenzhen University and visiting professor of Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. Being the top print artist in China, his “Xidi Village” series received prizes from China’s Ministry of Culture and China Artists’ Association (CAA). Ying was awarded the gold prize by Japan-China Print Awarding Foundation in 1991 and the 80s-90s Contribution Prize of Print Creation by CAA in 1999. His art exhibitions include: the 1982 “Modern Chinese Printmaking-Tuxedo” Joint Exhibition, Japan; 1988 “Modern Chinese Printmaking Exhibition,” Norway; 1990 “The 7th National Art Exhibition, Japan” 1992 “Le Salon d'Automne,” Paris; 1994 “21st International Printmaking Exhibition,” Russia; 1994 “International Printmaking Exhibition,” Korea; and the 2003 “Chinese Printmaking Today,” Person Gallery of The British Library London. In 2011, Ying held a solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in March and participated in the Venice Biennial Exhibition in June.
“Xidi Village Series” Version No. 3 and No. 1 were awarded prizes of excellence by the 8th National Art Exhibition. “Breaking the Black” and “Dreams in Huizhou” are both a part the National Art Museum of China collection. A full set of “Xidi Village Series” has been collected by the Muban Foundation, London and the British Museum.
