Born in 1983 in Taichung, Taiwan, Chang Li-Ren earned his M.F.A. from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at the Tainan National University of the Arts. His practice primarily revolves around video installations, conceptual projects, and animation, excelling at constructing narrative worlds that oscillate between the virtual and the real. A defining milestone in his trajectory, the "Classic Model Movies" series (commenced in 2008), reconfigures a visual language through expansive handcrafted sets, raw paper-mâché puppets, and micro-camera movements. By juxtaposing crude material textures with a sophisticated narrative structure, Chang challenges the audience’s perception of cinematic authenticity and the essence of image-making.

His artistic achievements have garnered significant international acclaim. In 2025, he was honored with the Grand Prize at the 23rd Taishin Arts Award for his monumental project, Battle City: Finale, a masterwork fourteen years in the making. Earlier in his career, he swept prestigious accolades including the First Prize of the Taipei Art Awards (2009), the Kaohsiung Award (2009), and the Grand Prize of the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Award. Chang’s work has been exhibited extensively at major global institutions, such as the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, the Gwangju Biennale, and the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB). His masterpieces are held in the permanent collections of esteemed organizations, including the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMOFA), the White Rabbit Gallery in Australia, and the Tainan Art Museum.
