Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1955, Nishi Makoto graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1982 with a major in Nihonga (Japanese painting). In 1985, he began self-teaching woodcarving and embarked on his artistic journey. His unique “Cat Carving” technique was developed in 1994, inspired by his beloved cat Chōchin, leading to a career devoted to sculpting expressive wooden cats.
Renowned for capturing the subtle gestures and personalities of cats, Nishi’s sculptures are imbued with both realism and affection. His works have earned prestigious accolades such as the Grand Prize at the Shinobazu Pond Object Art Festival (1990, 1992) and the Oya Woodcarving Folk Art Exhibition (1995). His charming creations have also been featured on popular Japanese TV programs including Pet Encyclopedia (Fuji TV) and The Giants of Beauty (TV Tokyo).
In addition to his artistic practice, Nishi is active in arts education, teaching cat carving classes at cultural centers run by major Japanese newspapers including Mainichi, Asahi, and Yomiuri. He also serves as a technical advisor to the Japan Mokushō Craft Association. His publications include Neko Dekichatta! (Shogakukan) and Cat Carving – A Guide to Wooden Cat Sculpting (Nichibō Publishing).
Nishi’s works radiate warmth and delight, making them highly recommended for both cat lovers and sculpture collectors.
