Fan Yang Tsung 范揚宗
Taiwanese 1982

Fan Yang-Tsung (b. 1982) was born in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and graduated from the Fine Arts program at Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan. He currently lives and works in Taiwan.

From his early series such as View from Within, Airplane Series, and Nightclub to his renowned Swimming Pool Series, Fan's mastery of painting techniques and intense visual tension has led to the creation of a distinctive artistic language—one that resonates universally without the need for translation. In the open yet intimate space of a public swimming pool, he explores the hidden desire of people to gaze at others, or even to be gazed at. Through peculiar and illogical perspectives, he depicts half-naked bodies in swimsuits with sunburned gradient skin, beads of sweat rolling and evaporating on the surface. Reflections of distant swimmers appear in oversized goggles, while the violent crashing of waves below contrasts with the languid warmth of the surface. These elements, intertwined with vivid colors, evoke a unique sensory experience.

Fan's works are part of prestigious collections, including the globally top-ranked El Segundo Museum of Art in Los Angeles and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. He has exhibited at Beijing Hive Contemporary Art Center in recent years, with group shows such as Silhouette of Splendors (2023) and Inward Gaze: Infinite Expressions (2022). In 2014, he was invited to the El Segundo Museum of Art in the U.S. for the HOME exhibition, alongside renowned artists such as Ludwig Richter and Théodore Géricault. His exhibition history includes AKI Leipzig Prospect, Leipzig, Germany (2019), Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin, Berlin, Germany (2018), Spinnerei, Leipzig, Germany (2018), Taipei Cultural Center in New York, USA (2009), and Elga Wimmer PCC, New York, USA (2009).
