+ OVERVIEW
This brush washer is carved from a pale celadon jade. A wooden base was custom-made for the jade carving. A big lotus leaf was carved with naturally curved edges, surrounded by a lotus pod and lotus flowers. Grains of the leaf are meticulously carved in detail. An curvaceous opening is located at the edge, to facilitate the washing without harming the brush. Stems tangled beneath to support the whole structure, while creating a pond-theme. The brush washer is an essential tool to remove excess ink from the brush, while the opening enhances the tending procedure. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, brush washers were presented in numerous formats resembling all kinds of daily objects. Jade is one of the materials most sought-after by ancient scholars, as jade is perceived to represent a gentleman with an honorable character. Craftsmanship of jade objects in the Ming and Qing Dynasties reached a mature period with exceptional jade carvings and superb material, allowing jade brush washers to be shaped vividly as a magnificent art object on a scholar's desk.
